Getting Started
In the first week of the unit, children are introduced to the idea that animals, including humans, eat many different plants and parts of plants. Children will:
- Grow and eat sprouts over the week
 - Continue to identify, talk, and think about plants and plant parts
 - Classify edible plants as either root, stem, or leaf plants
 - Compare indoor and outdoor plants, and collect and sort plants they find outdoors
 - Explore plants in their environment that show evidence of being eaten by animals
 - Listen to the read-aloud book Chicks and Salsa by Aaron Reynolds, a story about farm animals that try new foods, and watch a Between the Lions video of the story
 - Explore Eating the Alphabet by Lois Ehlert, a book that shows the many varieties of fruits and vegetables from A to Z
 - Be introduced to the letter “Ff,” the letter sound /f/, and the word farm
