When you are writing lists, recipes, or notes, give your older baby her own crayon and piece of paper to join in. Give her choices about what color crayon to use, and let your baby make marks on her paper. Talk about what she is doing.

If your baby's having difficulty, she may decide to “help” you instead. If that’s the case, let your baby sit with you, and help her hold your pen or her crayon, supporting her hand so that she can make marks on the paper. Praise her scribbling.

Some babies may be more interested in ripping up the paper than marking on it. If you don’t mind the mess, tearing can also be a good way to build fine motor skills! If you give your baby paper to crumple and tear, be sure to supervise carefully. Old wrapping paper and envelopes can be fun, but avoid newspaper (the ink may contain lead) and aluminum foil (babies can swallow tiny pieces).
