Watch Together: “Hung Up on ‘h’” (BTL clip)
ELA Focus Skills: Active Viewing, Letter Recognition, Phonological Awareness
Tell children that they are going to watch the video Between the Lions “Hung Up on ‘h’,” about the letter sound /h/.
- Show the video clip.
- Clarify the meaning of words such as hassled, harassed, and hackles.
Play the video again and have children say the /h/ sound whenever they hear the letter sound. Invite children to clap or dance along as Leona and her friend sing the country-western song about /h/.
Educator Tip: Guided and independent letter, sound, and word practice continues to take place in center activities. It is helpful to set up the literacy center immediately after the direct instruction and repeat instruction before children work in the literacy center identifying letters.
