Watch Together: “Words Beginning with ‘q’” (BTL clip)
ELA Focus Skills: Active Viewing, Speaking and Listening, Phonological Awareness
Educator Prep: Display labels, signs, etc., around the room, making sure many of them have the letter “Qq.”
Before You Watch
Tell children that they will watch a short Between the Lions video about the letter “Qq.” Give children a viewing focus. Say, Look for the letter “Qq” when it appears on the screen and hold your hand up each time you see a word with the letter "Qq."
As You Watch
View the video clip Between the Lions “Words Beginning with ‘q'” once without pausing.
- Play the video a second time. Before the second viewing, tell children you will pause after each word beginning with “Qq” so they can repeat the word and clap out the parts of each word.
After You Watch
After viewing, have children go on a letter hunt around the room. Say, Let’s see where we can find the letter “Qq” around our room. If you find a “Qq” stand next to it and when everyone has found a “Qq,” we will all take turns pointing to the letter “Qq.”
Educator Tip: Guided and independent letter, sound, and word practice continues to take place in center activities. It is helpful to set up the literacy center immediately after the direct instruction and repeat instruction before children work in the literacy center identifying letters.
