Educator Prep: Place plastic uppercase letters in a bag. Make a chart by drawing a line down the middle of a sheet of paper to divide it in half. Draw a straight line and a curved line at the upper left side of the paper and just a straight line at the upper right side.

Have children take one letter out of the bag. Trace the letters with children, then help them decide where to place it on the chart.

Begin to model the process by pulling a letter out of the bag and saying, Where am I going to place this letter L? The letter L has a straight line here and another one here. It has two straight lines and no curved lines, so I will place it on the side of the paper with only a straight line.

English Language Learners: If children are having trouble understanding what is meant by straight and curved lines, draw examples for them, or guide their fingers as they draw the lines by themselves. Have children trace the drawn lines with their fingers as you have them say the words straight and curved.
