Read The Ugly Vegetables by Grace Lin aloud to individuals or small groups.
Invite children to point out the houses in the neighborhood that have colorful flower gardens. Point to the vegetable garden and ask, Why does the little girl think her garden is ugly?
Linger over pages to allow children to talk about the things they see in the illustrations. Ask, If you had a garden, what would you plant there?
At the end of the story ask, Do you think the little girl still thinks her plants are ugly? Why do you think that?
