Educator Prep: Before gathering children, place word cards with words that begin with “y” around the room.
Tell children they are going to watch a short video clip Between the Lions “Words Beginning with ‘y’.”
- Have children stand. Demonstrate how to shape your body into a "Y" by raising your arms over your head and spreading them out. Have children repeat after you.
- Tell children to make a "Y" by raising and spreading their arms each time they see the letter "y" on the screen.
- View the video through once without pausing.
For the second viewing:
Pause after each word.
- Have a volunteer point to the letter "y" on the screen.
- Have all children repeat each word aloud.
After viewing, invite children to look around the room to find other words that begin with the letter “y.”
Adaptation: If younger children have difficulty finding words that begin with “y,” have a buddy shape his or her body as a “y.” (hands spread out over head) Then have both children walk around the room together matching the shape of the buddy to the letter “y.”
Educator Tip: Guided and independent letter, sound, and word practice continues to take place in center activities. It is helpful to set up the literacy center immediately after the direct instruction and repeat instruction before children work in the literacy center identifying letters.
