Tell children they will be writing a rhyme about houses. Review what rhyming words are with children before you begin. Ask, What are rhyming words? Say, Tool and stool are rhyming words because they have the same ending sound. Say the words with me: tool, stool. These words rhyme. Now who can tell me a word that rhymes with house?
You may wish to use a template, such as the one below. It includes partial lines so children can supply the rhyming word. Or, let children come up with their own ideas as a group.
Houses
A house may be a mansion,
An igloo or a shed,
The outside may be painted blue,
Or a lovely shade of _____. (red)
A house may be a houseboat,
Floating on the sea,
I’d be happy in any house
If my family was there with _____. (me)
Read the completed rhyme aloud with children. Then invite them to draw pictures to illustrate their rhyme.
